📚 Story behind the craft
This fabric set comes from a small workshop in Yunnan, China. I found it during one of my sourcing trips.
This 13-piece fabric for sewing set includes fabrics dyed in both ways: some in deep, calming blues using Isatis root; and others in warm, earthy tones created from persimmon juice, a fruit only available in autumn.
It reminded me of my childhood. This fruit, only in season during autumn, brought back memories — my mother would buy them for me as a treat. I still remember the crisp bite and mellow sweetness.
The persimmon dyeing process is slow and natural. The artisans crush green persimmons to extract the juice, soak the fabric in it, and then hang it under direct sunlight for days. This sunlight is what brings out the soft brown tones. If they want a deeper color, they repeat the process several times. The fabric becomes firmer, even with a leathery texture — this is why persimmon dye is sometimes called “sun dye” 🌞.
But what inspired me most was how they hold on to tradition while exploring new ways to keep it alive. Even the printed designs — though modern — are all created by the artisans themselves. Each pattern reflects their effort to blend heritage with innovation.
These fabrics carry that feeling — warm, earthy, and perfect for fall. It’s also why persimmon dye is lovingly called sun dye — because the color comes from days under the autumn sun. I hope your handmade piece carries that same warmth too.
They blend traditional techniques with modern patterns. That’s why I included them in our Indigo-Dyed Collection.
